They need. They seed. They breed.

An inhuman evil lurks in the depths of Lake Washington— an evil that walks among us. They look like us...they talk like us...but they are not us. And when Cassidy Jones discovers that they threaten life as we know it, can she summon the power to stop them? In her greatest test yet—and her greatest adventure— the world hangs in the balance against a relentless and insidious adversary: the Luminous.

After three books, I’ve become a big fan of Cassidy Jones. She’s such a memorable character. At only fifteen, Cassidy has become a superhero after gaining powers in a lab accident. She even has a rogues gallery now. They’re rather wacky but not lame. Lily White/Metal Woman seems to be Cassidy’s main nemesis. She’s sitting this book out, though. Cassidy and her sidekick, Emery Phillips, are going to have plenty on their plate without worrying about previous villains.

Cassidy Jones is the talk of Seattle now. She spends her nights working off excess energy; this sometimes involves crime-fighting. The news has taken to calling Cassidy the “Seattle Shadow.” She doesn’t have an actual superhero suit (or even name), but takes care to dress in all black. There’s a change in the status quo now, too. Cassidy’s family is aware of her powers and what she’s been up to this whole time. They’re understandably worried, but Serena and Gavin (Emery’s parents) assured the Joneses that Cassidy can handle herself.

The Joneses and the Phillipses are now the only ones who know Cassidy’s secret. Emery wants to keep it that way. Cassidy has some very close friends, but she’s not allowed to bring them into her confidence. The hardest one for Cassidy to keep lying to is Jared. He’s been her crush for years and their relationship is getting better every day. Jared even asked Drake—Cassidy’s dad—permission to date his daughter. Drake said he will grant it once Cassidy turns sixteen. She finds it romantic that Jared is willing to wait. Cassidy and Jared may not be a sure thing, though. A lot can happen in a year, and there are hints of a (dreaded?) love triangle.

This book’s main antagonist is way subtler than those that have emerged so far. I’m not going to spoil who it is, though. This enemy is still rather unusual. Cassidy’s fought a Metal Woman, a mutated Atrocity, and a savage mutant. None of them are quite like the antagonist in this book. Not even the genius Emery sees this enemy coming until it’s gained a solid foothold. If it weren’t for Cassidy’s powers, the enemy might have stayed undetected far longer. Has Cassidy finally met a supervillain even she can’t defeat?

Elise’s imagination continues to impress me. The world she’s created for Cassidy is intriguing and awesome. Most of Cassidy’s villains aren’t truly original (even she isn’t) but they’re not boring either. I also like that Cassidy has lots of people who love her. Having them know about her secret life is a nice change. And it seems a character who’s stayed on the fringe so far may join Team Cassidy. This raises my anticipation for the fifth book. Cassidy Jones and the Luminous was an awesome new entry in the series. It ends with a thrilling cliffhanger, though. Luckily the next book is available to read right away.

My rating: ★★★★ 1/2
4.5 stars - A fantastic page-turner!
