Are you a fan of star-crossed lovers in books? Then you might enjoy On The Way Down. It’s a contemporary romance about a superstar and an average person. The main character is Shaelyn Monroe. She’s a seventeen-year old with shallow pockets and modest aspirations. The love interest is Garrett Riordan, a popular Hollywood actor. They meet because Shaelyn’s mother is a low-level worker at the set of Garrett’s latest movie.

Garrett and Shaelyn notice each other at pretty much the same time. Shaelyn’s mother has been bringing her to work. Having nothing to do, Shaelyn spends her time reading at one of the trailers. Garrett spots her and breaks the ice. There’s easy rapport between them, which surprises Shaelyn a bit. She doesn’t fangirl over Garrett despite knowing who he is. Garrett seems to appreciate that Shaelyn isn’t a groupie. She treats him like a regular person.

Although Shaelyn doesn’t know it at first, Garrett falls hard for her. There’s one big obstacle: Shae is seventeen and Garrett is twenty-six. He’s not some entitled superstar who takes what he wants, though. Like a gentleman, Garrett waits for Shaelyn to turn eighteen before making his move. It’s not going to be a long time, but still. The two become good friends at first. Shaelyn likes this, as the town where the set is located is pretty small. There’s almost no one else for her to talk to.

Although nothing can happen between Shaelyn and Garrett yet, he stakes his claim early on. Garrett makes arrangements to hire Shaelyn as his personal assistant. This doesn’t raise eyebrows, but there’s a potential complication. Shaelyn and her mother, Jewel, are not on good terms. The two have been at odds for practically Shaelyn’s whole life. Jewel had her daughter at fifteen, too young. She resents this, thinking Shaelyn’s arrival screwed up her life. Now Jewel seems to be jealous that Shaelyn has attracted a superstar’s attention. It’s a good thing that Shaelyn has a loving grandmother, Goldie.

The romance between Shaelyn and Garrett is slow-build. It’s not long before it feels like they’re soulmates. Garrett definitely feels like Shaelyn is his one true love. It looks like Shaelyn’s eighteenth birthday will be the start of an epic love story. Or will it? As big of a complication as Jewel is, this novel needs something bigger. And it delivers. I’ll let you discover what happens on your own. It is a big tragedy, but I thought Shaelyn jumped to an irrational conclusion in the aftermath. This was a little surprising, as Shae isn’t one of those girls with low self-esteem. I really look forward to what happens next.

My rating: ★★★★
4 stars - Definitely enjoyed it!
