Some Secrets Are Better Left Buried…

When the mysterious Gavin Phillips returns to Seattle after a prolonged and unexplained absence, he threatens to expose fifteen-year-old Cassidy Jones’s incredible secret: she is a superhero. But his presence is far more sinister than she realizes, for it soon becomes apparent that his hidden agenda holds a dark and dangerous intent that will unleash an unparalleled evil upon an unsuspecting world. Can Cassidy stop him before all is lost?

Teen superhero Cassidy Jones is back for the third book in her series. As the others, it takes place in Seattle. Cassidy's an almost fifteen-year-old who gained superpowers in a lab accident. It’s been a few months since. In that time, Cassidy has kept herself busy. She’s already fought a python, a tiger, and two supervillains. The latest one, Lily White/Metal Woman, escaped at the end of the previous book. No one is sure what she is up to.

The only people who know Cassidy has powers are Dr. Serena Phillips and her genius son, Emery. The latter is just a year older than Cassidy but has already gone to college. He's sort of Cassidy's sidekick, helping her on her exploits. The secrecy is getting to Cassidy, though. She’s finding it harder to keep lying to her family. As it is, Cassidy suspects that her little brother, Chazz, knows about her double life. Chazz may be not much older than a toddler, but he’s really smart.

Something else is worrying Cassidy lately. Emery’s father, Gavin, returned from who knows where and is staying with his family. Cassidy is a bit afraid of the guy. She thinks he might be bad news. Cassidy’s misgivings rise when she overhears a suspicious conversation. She tells Emery that some bad guys are pulling a heist at the local museum. To prepare, Emery takes Cassidy to meet with Riley, one of his friends. Riley’s helped Emery with a few missions before, but Cassidy hasn’t met her yet. The meeting is way different than she expected.

Knowing what the goons intend to steal, Emery cooks up a familiar plan. In the two previous books, he’s had Cassidy dress in costumes to hide her identity. This time, Cassidy's outfit is a lot spookier. Although she won’t admit it, I suspect she enjoys this. I must say I’m surprised Emery hasn’t sewn Cassidy a proper superhero suit yet. She doesn’t even have a superhero name (maybe Violet Blur, or Olympic Girl?). Still, I’m not disappointed that the Cassidy Jones series hasn’t adopted the usual superhero stuff yet. I like Cassidy as she is.

One of the things I like about this series is the character relationships. Cassidy may not be Ms. Popular but she still has good friends. She’s also recently fixed her relationship with Jared. Cassidy’s had a crush on him forever and is happy they’re back on good terms. She spends so much time with Emery that everyone thinks they like each other, though. This creates a fun love triangle that includes Miriam, Cassidy’s best friend. Miriam is hopelessly smitten with Emery. Another character with a slowly-developing arc is Joe. He’s a homeless guy that Cassidy has befriended since book one. Joe is aware Cassidy has powers but doesn’t know who she is.

Three books in, and Cassidy Jones is still as compelling as in the first book. Despite being special, Cassidy is a relatable and likable person. Her character arc isn’t rich yet, but she’s still growing. There are more books coming in this series as well. I’m eager to see what’s next in Cassidy’s story. Things are getting exciting, not only with Cassidy but also with Emery, Jared, and Gavin. The Seventh Attendant reveals a lot more about them all than the previous books. If you’re already invested in this series, keep going. It’s getting more interesting with each new entry.
