After the way the previous book ended, I readily started Out of Turn. The stakes are higher than ever now. Blane Kirk, one of the protagonists, made a terrible mistake that may just have cost him the love of his life, Kathleen Turner. She’s been recovering from their breakup for the past few months. Kathleen’s done her best to live her life as usual, returning for work at The Drop (a place she used to bartend at). Everything’s normal for Kathleen now, almost monotonous. This doesn’t last long, though. Someone out th
ere wants to kill Kathleen yet again. And much to her dismay, Blane endeavors to protect her.

It must be extremely awkward to interact with an ex again after months of no seeing each other. To make it worse, the reason Blane and Kathleen broke up was awful. Even though she wants him out of her life, Blane won’t go anywhere while Kathleen’s life is in danger. Needing some buffer, Kathleen asks for Kade to return. Unfortunately, she suffers another attempt on her life. An unsettled Kade hightails it back to Indy to protect her.

Blane reveals to Kathleen that someone from their recent past wants to kill her for revenge. She isn’t surprised, and neither is she afraid. Kathleen has been through so much to be scared of threats to her life. This isn’t the same girl introduced in No Turning Back. Kathleen is tougher, wiser, and colder than ever. Her spirit hasn’t withered, though, which is a good thing. Despite Kathleen’s fearlessness, Kade thinks it wise to take her out of Indy for the meantime. The two go on a business trip to Las Vegas. Kathleen’s pleased to learn that Kade is trying to turn his life around for her. As a computer expert, he’s starting to moonlight as a penetration tester.

Although there’s always been sexual attraction between Kade and Kathleen, it’s stronger than ever. Kathleen’s single again, but she doesn’t want to give in to Kade’s advances. Not when she’s just broken up with his brother. I personally find that admirable. Love happens, but there’s no reason why Kathleen shouldn’t wait a while before making a move on Kade. Waiting makes Kathleen look like a better person. There’s not much time for waiting around, though. Recent events force Kathleen and Kade together, as the former inadvertently finds danger again. She just can’t get a break, finding enemies at every turn.

Back in Indy, it’s Blane who’s in trouble this time. He’s being framed for the murder of one of his exes, the one he was closest to besides Kathleen. And who should be the prosecutor? James Gage, a sworn enemy who’s been around since book one. He’s always been extremely competitive with Blane, and now has more reasons to harbor a grudge: Kade killed Mr. Gage Sr. In addition, James is also highly obsessed with Kathleen. They’ve had tense run-ins before, although Kathleen usually comes out winning.

Seeing how distanced Blane and Kade have become makes Kathleen guilty. She’s sorry to have come between them, and is planning to leave. Kathleen would rather lose the two dearest people in her life than have them remain at odds because of her. Blane and Kade aren’t letting Kathleen go easily, though. One of them will have Kathleen, and it’s a matter of time to see who does. As the previous three books, Out of Turn is suspenseful and with a lot of romance. The three main characters have come a long way, and they still have some to go. Kathleen’s always been desirable, but she’s even more so now that she’s a little more badass—thanks to Kade’s help. Who will she choose? I can’t wait to find out in the next book.
