BOOK REVIEW: UNMERCIFUL BY CAT MILLER

Title: Unmerciful
Author: Cat Miller
Genre: Fantasy, romance
Published on: May 22, 2018, self-published

Being a vampire sure bites…
Lindsay Roselle’s biggest worry should have been what to wear under her gown at her college graduation, not how she was going to survive the night as a newly turned vampire. After catching the attention of the Rogue, a vampire out to destroy the Vampire Nation, Lindsay was forced to undergo the change herself. Convinced she’s fated for an end worse than death, Lindsay had all but given up until she’s rescued...by the last person she ever expected to see again.

Kayden Paris wasn’t anything like the playboy Lindsay remembered from the night they shared together...and she wouldn’t have forgotten the fangs. Kayden is the heir to his vampire clan and son of the mightiest warrior in the Vampire Nation, but even he may not be able to heal all the wounds Lindsay suffered at the hands of the Rogue.

In a life fraught with secrets, lies, and deadly enemies, Lindsay must first learn to trust herself in order to survive.

After a long wait (six years of it!) the third entry in the Forbidden Bond saga is here. It was a big relief for me when I spotted Unmerciful in the Kindle store. I thought the author wasn't going to release any more sequels. I've read quite a few unfinished series by now. It's a shame when it happens, especially when you really like the books. Fortunately, Forbidden Bond is still an active series.

Each book in this series has a different couple as the main protagonists. Unmerciful is Kayden Paris’s and Lindsay Roselle’s story. Both characters were introduced in Unbound. He’s a member of the Vampire Nation’s warrior class. As the son of the chief, Gage Paris, Kayden is one of those characters with big shoes to fill. He went through a rebellious phase a few years ago. When Kayden met Danielle Vaughn, she changed his world. They didn’t end up together, but Dani still made Kayden a better man.

In contrast, Lindsay was a minor character. She was one of Dani's human friends from their short time in college. Lindsay and Kayden met around that time. They had an amazing night together. Kayden didn't continue seeing Lindsay after that. It's out of the question for a vampire warrior to date a human. Now, years later, Linday's back and in a horrible position. The Rogue, main villain of the Forbidden Bond series, has held her captive for a while. She's been testing a drug called Hypervamp on Lindsay. It causes vampires to go into a mindless berserker rage. The Rogue aims to use it to overthrow the Vampire Nation and reveal it to the humans.

Kayden and fellow warrior Abel raid the Rogue's nest at the start of the book. They're shocked to find Lindsay, and as a vampire no less. Kayden takes Lindsay with him so she can receive medical care. From then on, he spends most of his free time with her. It's almost as if Kayden is picking up where he left off with Lindsay. Although he left her, he never forgot her. Kayden's almost surprised to realize how strong his feelings for Lindsay become. Unfortunately, she has a long road to travel. Lindsay doesn't just need to accept her new life as a vampire and recover from Hypervamp. She must also overcome the psychological scars the Rogue inflicted on her.

Other characters from the series return in Unmerciful. Among them are Dani and Chase, the couple from the first book. They have smaller roles now, so another character got more prominence. She’s Samantha Vaughn, daughter of Griffin. He’s the leader of one of the Vampire Nation’s three ruling houses. This makes Samantha a princess of sorts in their society. She used to be mean and stuck-up, but has now changed her ways. Samantha becomes instrumental in helping Lindsay recover. The two met while Lindsay was in recovery, and became friends. It was a nice surprise to see Samantha become a better person. This means all Vaughn children (Dani, Samantha, Brandi, and J.R.) are on the side of the good guys now.

Unmerciful was a much better read than I expected. It was absolutely worth the long wait. I’d looked forward to seeing these characters again. The continued war against the Rogue also increases the suspense. The ending suggests that there will be another book. I hope it doesn’t take too long to release this time. It’ll probably have Samantha Vaughn as the heroine. Seeing her redeem herself even further will be great.

My rating: ★★★★ 1/2
