After reading The Girl Behind the Wall, I thought it was good enough to continue the series. It was a bit of a short read, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t entertaining. This sequel continues the story of Victoria Brommer. She’s a fourteen-year-old vampire who was in a deep sleep for 400 years. Victoria’s parents hid her in their castle in Austria to protect her from an evil group. Four centuries later, Craig and his daughter Alexis stumbled upon Victoria. They realized what she was right away. It took a few weeks for Craig and Alexis to warm up to Victoria. The two bring her back to the United States with them.
For safety reasons, Victoria now goes by Vickie Hewitt. Craig managed to enroll her at Clear Lake, the same private high school Alexis goes to. It wasn’t hard for Vickie to pass the entrance tests. Vampires in this series can learn stuff extremely fast. Vickie also doesn’t drink blood; her diet is just like a human’s. There does exist a vampire race that sucks blood, called Sanguinaries. It appears there are none left, though. Vickie is perhaps the only survivor of a crusade that claimed her parents’ lives. The evil group, known as the Slayer Circle, sought to eradicate all vampires. They are confident their mission was accomplished…for now.
Even with Vickie’s super-learning, high school will not be a piece of cake. She’s excited but a little apprehensive at the prospect. At least Craig and Alexis had a few weeks to prepare Vickie. She’s getting used to being among large crowds. More importantly, Vickie is learning to suppress some of her vampire instincts. Vickie has a strong danger sense, which has caused a lot of property damage already. Despite how dangerous she is, Vickie seems like a pacific girl. All she wants is to have a good life and coexist with others.
I found The Girl Behind the Wall fun because of the new situations Vickie faces. When you wake up after 400 years, you may as well have traveled to another planet. This continues in The Girl In the Back Row. Vickie will face struggles that all teens have to put up with. At least as a sophomore, she has a much easier time than she would as a freshman. As it is, Vickie catches the attention of Meghan Fitz, Clear Lake’s designated bully. She sets her sights on Vickie just for being the new girl. Of course poor Meghan has no idea how dangerous Vickie is! Luckily, the vampire’s got a lot better at controlling her emotions.
Craig and Alexis continue teaching Vickie more about the world. The latter gets a computer of her very own. It’s a basic model, yet more than good enough for a beginner. Vickie quickly learns how to use it. She does get a bit too comfortable on the Internet, though. This may have serious consequences in the future. Meanwhile, Vickie’s also dealing with her first crush. It’s Eric, a friend of Alexis. Eric happens to like Vickie too. Amusingly enough, neither of them can pluck up the courage to tell each other how they feel.
The Girl In the Back Row was a good continuation of Vickie’s story. Most of the events in the previous book happened in Austria. Now Vickie is in the United States. It’s not much different, except when you remember when and where she comes from. Vickie is still getting used to the world, and learning how to interact with people. She’s also starting to build an identity. Vickie isn’t sure who she is anymore. I look forward to seeing how she evolves over the next few books. I recommend this series to fans of fantasy, vampires, and urban fantasy. Younger readers may like it more, but adults should find it just as entertaining.
